Or, we could build a high value industry of modular, virtually zero CO2 mini power stations..& #export them
Boris Johnson’s welcome offshore wind statement y’day, promoting the #NorthEast’s ports & future NE supply chain, is of strategic importance. But what about electrical BASELOAD, come rain or shine? Without nuclear we will still rely on gas imports to supply energy on still, dull days
The UK’s #RollsRoyce powered nuclear submarines have been operational for 50 years& RR employ most of the UK’s nuclear skills. Their consortium proposes reactors which can be trucked to site for simple installation
And in manufacturing, replication=cost saving
Typically at 400MW these mini reactors are 12% the size of Hinkley Point’s & would power a city the size of #Leeds #Newcastle or #Sheffield
With proven technology we could create a very big new, climate friendly industry.

What a wonderful, #innovative, high end, #engineering, #technological and #logistical feat to enable the sharing of #green #energy’s non linear production. In this new post #fossilfuels world, balancing and smoothing neighboring countries’ variable power demand, whether it be #wind #solar, #hydro or #nuclear is as important as the generation itself. So, another #interconnector layed on the seabed to protect our energy supply. These cables are critical to our renewable energy future as we swiftly move away from coal and then gas. It demonstrates the world beating problem solving skills of engineers from the #UK and #Norway.

UK Motorsport Leads the World, On and Off the Track

The sector contributes £9billion/year to #finances #GDP & over 80% of motorsport companies are #exporters. It’s a very high tech, mega value-add, top skill #industry. And it is a superbly successful #innovation and #incubation hub for UK #business.

We also lead the world in road going supercars too, so great to see the new Gordon Murray designed 3 seat, £2.8m, T50 complete with 650 bhp from a gorgeous new 4 litre #Cosworth V12 & an #Xtrac 6 speed manual gearbox. It’s only dinky- #Porsche Boxster sized- so perfect for the UK’s narrow roads. Even #Lotus’s legendary Colin Chapman, the undisputed King of light weighting in fibreglass, would have found Murray’s latest composite supercar jaw dropping.. tipping the scales at just 986KG! Or 400 KG less than even the lightest #McClarens. 325KG lighter than the Boxster. Chapman’s budget wouldn’t have permitted a carbon fibre body, or a bespoke state-of-the-art V12, granted, but this is still a staggering #British #technological, packaging & #engineering achievement.

More importantly, just as the #Mini, #Concorde, #RAF #Jaguar XJ6 & #JCB backhoe/loader inspired me into engineering, this will inspire the next generation of #STEM #technicians and #engineers. #IMechE #MIA #IET

• In August we competed an opportunity assessment for a 100 employee, design and manufacture van conversion company in Yorkshire, UK. Over the last 3 years this very successful company has doubled in size. We anticipate after this re focussing that they will double again in the next 3 years
• After months of agreeing scope and deliverables Windrush Manufacturing Solutions finally won a diagnostic assessment, February 2020, in a very famous fried chicken factory in the Philippines. Diagnostic, completed in workshop format, was delivered with a task force agreed route map for the expansion of this famous brand. This is currently paused due to the Covid 19 pandemic
• Prior to that we completed a very complicated but successful move of a fish-in-sauce line from Sweden to Spain. Over the 18 elapsed months of the assignment, we worked in 5 languages with the team which totalled 90 engineers, manufacturing experts and logistics specialists. The plant is now running better in northern Spain than it did in Sweden with significantly higher efficiencies and lower waste

Proud to be British! Another Gordan Murray World Beater!

The UK leads the world in #motorsport #engineering, supercars too…remember the 1992 Murray designed #McClaren F1 with V12 #BMW power & 3 seats with the driver central? Well 28 years on Gordon is back with a new #Porsche Boxster sized #UK #designed and #manufactured re invention of the original F1. Even #Lotus’s legendary Colin Chapman, the undisputed King of Light Weighting through super clever aerospace level design/materials selection, would find Murray’s latest supercar jaw dropping. Weight wise it’s a total revelation. With a new naturally aspirated 4litre #Cosworth V12 developing 650bhp @12,100rpm, driving the rear wheels through a 6 speed manual Xtrac gearbox. It weighs just 980KG!! About 400 KG less than even the lightest supercars. Or 325KG lighter than a Boxster!
Granted, Chapman’s budget wouldn’t have permitted a carbon fibre body nor a brand new Cossie V12, but this is still a staggering #British technological marvel and stellar engineering achievement. Concorde inspired me to study engineering..this car would have done so too!! #STEM
Just a tad outside my price range at £2.8m…but dreams are made of this!

A bit late to switch from South Wales manufacture to France for spiritual Defender replacement?

The impressive looking Ineos Grenadier, revealed in pics and “off road” CGI, just 7 days ago, was due to made in Bridgend, assembled from a Portuguese supplied ladder chassis and BMW engines from Germany. Production allegedly slated for late 2021. Now, just a week later, Ineos are seriously looking to build the 4×4 in a Mercedes ex Smart factory in NE France nr Strasborg. Civil work on both Welsh and Portuguese factories has been stopped.

Two questions:
1) Surely for a professional outfit like Ineos, the initial logistics modelling would have concluded that making the chassis in Portugal + shipping to South Wales was risky & costly?
2) Cynic that I am, is it a poker playing “Johnnie Come Lately” begging bowl ruse to get more money from #Welsh and #UK governments to build the chassis in Bridgend?

Fingers crossed the Grenadier will STILL be Made in Wales from Welsh steel.. including the chassis. Now it’s over to our politicians!

Offshore wind power enables local Hydrogen production! North East pilot plant?

Just 5 years ago #Siemens Gamesa’s #Denmark biggest wind turbine generated 6MW. Now, SG has won an order for100 of their new 14MW giants, in a North Sea windfarm, east of Redcar #Tees side. Vast progress! Some stats: 262m tall, rotor 222m dia, blades:108m long! Staggering numbers, a huge tribute to SG’s design & manufacturing #engineers. And more good news; SG now has a working UK blade factory in #Hull.

Renewable energy has all but extinguished UK coal fired electricity generation, so it increases the environmental allure of electric cars. But there’s an infrastructure prize too if, post Covid, we use UK renewable/green energy (incl #solar #nuclear) to generate #hydrogen. As my ‘A’ level #stem #chemistry teacher told us, glorious H2 is the energy “silver bullet” burning cleanly to make heat&water. But making it from H2O, by electrolysis, requires energy. Clearly fossil fuel (coal, methane gas, oil) makes no carbon sense. But abundant renewables gives us options: a multitude of electrolysis plants dotted around the UK feeding from each wind/solar farm? They can be tapped into UK’s existing methane gas network & in gas cylinders trucked to our petrol/diesel stations for use in #fuelcells

Rolls-Royce triggers £250bn nuclear race

Huge economic boost if UK consortium gets go-ahead to build fleet of mini reactor plants!

Without the mighty Rolls Royce 27 litre V12 Merlin engine in our Hurricanes, Spitfires & Lancasters would we have had the firepower to defeat the Nazis?

Post WW2 UK engineers pioneered our nuclear industry. Now our old, but safe Magnox plants are being decommissioned, & we’ve turned to Europe’s EDF to build the huge and costly 3.2 GW Hinkley Point C nuclear plant. An identical monster could be built at Sizewell C albeit with lead time/cost lessons

Or, post covid we could reset our approach to the way we a) build and generate agile, zero CO2 clean power +b) make high value exportable products!

The UK’s submarines have been safely nuclear powered for 50 years by RR who employ the majority of the UK’s nuclear engineers. The consortium they lead proposes factory made reactors which can be trucked to site for simple installation. Typically at 300MW these are 10% the size of Hinkley Point’s & would power a city the size of Newcastle or Leeds.

Mini reactors should be pursued at the highest political level! We could create a world leading export to the world with massive climate change advantages!
